Star Trek XI Fanfic Recs

Because damn if this fandom doesn't produce some amazing fic.
All of these are gen, though there's some hints of pairings here and there. Because I am a huge sucker for gen fic, especially with a fandom like Trek where there's so many characters and aside from that, they're all interacting in canon in a way that makes for great gen fic. And some of these I've seen on like fifty million rec lists but OH WELL. THEY'RE AMAZINGLY GOOD.
SO ANYWAYS. THE RECS.

- Author's summary: "Rules of the universe," he declares, and then corrects himself before Spock can get his astrophysics on. "Rules of humanity. Warriors who've drawn weapons, shed blood, triumphed together must drink together." (The consequences of actions, and the rules that you cannot bend or ignore.)
Kat's notes →This was the epilogue to the movie I needed. The ending of the movie was all fine and dandy, but you tend to forget at that point the sheer amount of loss in the beginning. This fic doesn't ignore that. And the voice is so quintessentially Kirk. I can really see him doing this after they get back to Earth. The conversations with his crew are just amazing and, at the same time, a little heartbreaking, especially the one with Uhura.

- Author's summary:"Great," Kirk says. "In the end, it's not going to be punching someone in the face, or shooting something, or even in some barfight – it's going to be a goddamned diplomatic mission gone wrong that does me in."
Kat's notes →I love every part of this fic to itty bitty pieces. Seriously. First of all, it's the bromance OT3. Second of all, the author has the dynamic between Kirk and Bones and Spock down like nothing else. Third of all... it's funny as all get out. Seriously. Jim's lying on the floor of a broken spacecraft bleeding out and poisoned, Spock's suffering from hypothermia and it still manages to be hilarious and churn out lines like "How many fingers am I holding up?" "Three, but they're very condescending." and it works so well. The ending is also amazing. While it's not funny, per se, it's the perfect ending to a fic like this and it makes me love Bones even more.

- Author's summary:Five times Pavel Chekov hated being the only seventeen-year-old on the Enterprise.
Kat's notes → So I totally didn't realize that Murphy's Law of Jim Kirk Diplomacy and this were written by the same person until just now. Ahahaha. ANYWAYS. Chekov. Anyone who knows me and Trek knows that I love Chekov to little bits and pieces. I'll admit that I love the big characters more, but Chekov holds a special place in my heart. And this fic does him justice like nothing I've seen. People seem to forget that behind the cute-as-kittens face and hilarious accent he's seventeen. He's not exactly a child and gdit, teenagers get annoyed when they're treated like children. And Kirk is such a devious smartass. I love it.

- Author's summary: Not exactly the summayr, but '... things like "wouldn't it be awesome if nu!Kirk time-traveled through a singularity and ended up in young Spock Prime's time? There would be much eyebrow-raising and nerve pinching!"'
Kat's notes →Oh my god. Ohmygod. This just made my life I am so not even kidding. It's so lulzy and hilarious and so amazingly Trek that I can't help but put it on a rec list. The nerve pinch had me in stitches and the banter between TOS!Bones and XI!Kirk is so amazing. I love how those two can go at it, no matter what universe they're in. And Spock making a joke is so very TOS. HE IS A TROLLY JERKFACE AND I LOVE IT.
Earth Kids Are Assholes by
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
- Author's summary: Spock and Kirk make friends while bleeding. So exactly what happened, except they're in grade school. AU. Gen.
Kat's notes →s;ladkfdjkgfd. This fic. My love for it knows no bounds. The idea of Kirk and Spock meeting when they were younger is interesting and it's pulled off so well here. I love the fact that Amanda is in it, too, even if it's just for a short while. She is such a kickass momma. And the ending made me laugh out loud. :D
a fucking space opera (or Six Characters Who Didn't Board the USS Enterprise) by

- Author's summary: None. The title's pretty self explanatory.
Kat's notes → What to say about this fic other than OH MY GOD IT'S HILARIOUS. Usually I don't like crossover fics but this and the next one on the list may have changed my mind. It is that good. And the characters the author picked to throw in the Trekverse are amazing and. How can you not love the giant squid from Hogwarts taking over Jim's quarters?
People Who Repair Quantums, or Five Planets The Enterprise Never Visited by
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
- Author's summary: "So you're a drug-addicted messianic cult dedicated to drinking your own distilled urine so your descendants generations down the road can grow palm trees. How's that working out for you?"
Kat's notes →This is, hands down, one of my top three favorite Trek fics ever. So not even kidding. I can't really think of anything to say other than go read it, right now. It's somehow hilarious and scary and incredibly poignant all at once. The planets the author used are well picked and, dear lord, the last one broke my heart into tiny pieces. Seriously. Go read it.
